Candy corn
What you never knew about the holiday classic
Jack Turner
| While many will argue by whom and when candy corn was invented, one plausible story is that George Renninger invented the Halloween favorite in the 1880s and had it produced by the Wunderle Candy Company. Jelly Belly Candy Company has made candy corn continuously with its original recipe since 1898, longer than any company in the business today. Candy corn helped carry the Goelitz Candy Company (now Jelly Belly) through both world wars and the Great Depression. In the 19th century, candy makers began making corn and other novelty shapes such as chestnuts, turnips, cloverleaves and many others. One kernel of candy corn is just over 4 calories. A one-ounce serving has 110 calories. About 15 billion kernels of candy corn are sold annually, according to the National Confectioners Association. |
