Kids can cook
Whether eating, helping you cook or simply gathering with the family, kids love to be in the kitchen. SARA FERGUSON, West Yolo regional librarian for the rural libraries in Yolo County, serves up books to inspire kids to develop their kitchen skills and learn to love cooking in no time.
AGES 4-8
Ferguson likes MOLLIE KATZEN’s latest book, Salad People and More Real Recipes: A New Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up (Tricycle Press, $17.95) for the 20 kid-tested recipes that encourage creativity and healthy eating habits. She says the “cooking hints and safety tips round out this delightfully tasty collection.”
Written for the beginner chef, Big Snacks, Little Meals: After School, Dinnertime, Anytime (Lark Books, $9.95) by ROSE DUNNINGTON will entice kids with healthy snacks to satisfy their after-school hunger. Ferguson says the 50 “easy recipes will get their salivary glands moving as they create finger foods, desserts and other delicious tummy-filling delights.”
AGES 9-12
With innovative recipes and cooking methods, Cooking in a Can: More Campfire Recipes for Kids (Gibbs Smith Publishing, $9.95) by KATHERINE L. WHITE will have kids wanting to extend summer camping well into autumn. “Whether you stay in the backyard or wander up the mountain,” Ferguson says, “[this book] will provide you with opportunities for good fun and great food.”
