Write on!
The goal of National Novel Writing Month has always been simple: to create a 175-page, 50,000-word novel. Participants are allowed to begin writing on Nov. 1, and must finish by midnight, Nov. 30. The reason behind NaNoWriMo is just as simple: to forget everything you ever thought about writer’s block, craft and quality—and write!
The project was started in 1999 with just 21 Bay Area people. By 2007, more than 100,000 participants worldwide joined in, with more than 15,000 of them crossing the finish line.
But if you think only adults are allowed to be this foolish, think again. The National Novel Writing Month’s Young Writers Program is aimed at authors 12 and younger, and in 2007, more than 18,000 kids and teens in 366 classrooms worldwide chose their own word count goal for the month. Separate from the NaNoWriMo main site, YWP is a fun, high-velocity environment geared towards students and teachers, with curricula, games, and exercises for elementary, middle, and high school students. YWP also runs Script Frenzy, which takes place in April for all you movie fanatics.
All teachers, librarians and students that are interested in having their classroom participate or hosting NaNoWriMo events, don't hesitate... sign up now and write on!—A.C.
